4. Opening Prayer:

Gracious and Merciful God, thank you for giving us the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel as our Mother, our Queen, our Advocate, our Patroness, our Protectress, our Sister, our Princess and our Intercessor. As we enjoy her patronage, open our hearts and minds so that we may see and appreciate all you have done for us. Bless us as we strive to imitate her virtues especially her obedience, humility, purity, faith, and prayerfulness. Be gracious to us and hear our prayers. Grant the intentions of your holy Church and the desires of our hearts and of those we are praying for in this novena. May your Holy Spirit renew in the hearts of the faithful the grace of this devotion, even as we work and pray for its spread and growth.

O Queen-Mother of Carmel, guide and bless us always. Intercede with God and obtain for us all our spiritual and material needs. Make our prayers and works during these days of our novena to be pleasing and acceptable to God. Protect us, watch-over us, and lead us to the Throne of Grace and the Holy Mountain, Christ our Lord. Amen.

8. The Solemn Novena Talk:

[The talks are assigned to people so that they may prepare ahead. Each talk may last about 20 minutes and a few questions may be allowed]:

i. Day 1 (July 7): The Miraculous Image of Our Lady of Mount Carmel OR The person of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel.

[The Book: Consecration and Entrustment to Our Lady of Mount Carmel, contains a lot of information both on the Miraculous Image of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and the person of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. The talk does not only aim at introducing the people to Our Lady of Mount Carmel, but also to make them know why they should be devoted to her.]

ii. Day 2 (July 8): St. Elijah and the Blessed Virgin Mary in the history and spiritual traditions of the Carmelite Order (cf.1 Kgs 18:41-46) OR St. Elijah, the first devotee of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.

[The first thing is to acknowledge that Elijah, Carmel’s inspirational father, ministered on Mount Carmel, the birthplace of the Carmelite Order and where the Carmelites built their first Chapel in honour of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. This holy mountain where  thefierce prophet defended the worship of God over that of the Canaanite deity, Baal (1 Kgs 18), performed many miracles including resurrection, bringing down fire from the sky and ascending into the heavens alive (2 Kgs 2:11; 2 Kgs 3:6-7); is where he also saw a little cloud like a man’s hand rising out of the sea (1 Kgs 18:44), which the Carmelites see as the prototype of the Mother of God. It is the only Mountain in the Sacred Scripture that is totally dedicated to and placed under the patronage of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. The Book: Our Lady of Mount Carmel and the Carmelites, contains a lot of information on Elijah’s exploits on Mount Carmel and the various ways through which he inspired devotion to Our Lady of Mount Carmel].

iii. Day 3 (July 9): St. Simon Stock and the Brown Scapular.  [The Book: The Heroes of the Brown Scapular, is an excellent source of information regarding the life of St. Simon Stock and his struggles to save the Carmelite Order before receiving the Brown Scapular from Our Lady of Mount Carmel as a symbol of her maternal protection over the Carmelite Order and all those who are devoted to her and wear the Scapular].

iv. Day 4 (July 10): The Spiritual Benefits of Consecration to Our Lady of Mount Carmel OR The Uniqueness of Consecration to Our Lady of Mount Carmel. [See: Consecration and Entrustment to Our Lady of Mount Carmel].

v. Day 5 (July 11): The Brown Scapular and Our Lady of Mount Carmel OR The Brown Scapular as the Garment of Our Lady of Mount Carmel OR The Uniqueness of the Carmelite Devotional Scapular.  [The Book: The Heroes of the Brown Scapular, as an excellent source of information for these three topics. All those who wear the Brown Scapular should be helped to know that they are consecrated to Our Lady of Mount Carmel].
