What makes the Rosary of Our Lady of Mount Carmel different?
Many Catholics know the five-decade Dominican Rosary. But the Discalced Carmelite Order preserves a special treasure: The Rosary of Our Lady of Mount Carmel — six decades, prayed in honour of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.

Our Rosary has no crucifix — only Brown wooden beads and the large medal of Our Lady of Mount Carmel inscribed: OUR LADY OF MOUNT CARMEL, PRAY FOR US. It is humble, strong, and Carmelite. We begin not with the Cross, but with the face of Mother and Child, for Carmel goes to Jesus through Mary.
What Makes it Different?
Unlike the five-decade Rosary, our Rosary has 63 Hail Marys — in honour of the 63 years of Our Lady’s earthly life, a devotion dear to Carmel:
- 3 Hail Marys on the medal, for Faith, Hope and Charity
- 60 Hail Marys in the six decades (6 x 10)
We pray six decades in honour of the six privileges and titles of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, and to ask her, as Protectress of the Carmelites and Brown Scapular Wearers, for protection.
How to Pray the Rosary of Our Lady of Mount Carmel — Step by Step
Hold the medal in your hand. Since there is no crucifix, we begin with the medal itself, looking at Our Lady and her Child.
1. Sign of the Cross
Kiss the medal and make the Sign of the Cross:
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
2. On the Medal — Profession of Faith
Still holding the medal, pray:
Apostles’ Creed. On the beads, Our Father, Three Hail Marys for Faith, Hope and Charity, and Glory Be.
3. Praying the Six Decades
Each decade consists of 1 Our Father, 10 Hail Marys, and according to an ancient Carmelite use, the Creed is prayed at the end of each decade.
4. Final Prayers on the Medal
At the end of the sixth decade, return to the medal and pray:
Hail Holy Queen …
When to Pray It?
We encourage all to pray the Rosary of Our Lady of Mount Carmel daily, especially on:
- Mondays and Saturdays (traditional Carmel days)
- July 16 — Solemnity of Our Lady of Mount Carmel
- Wednesdays for enrolled souls and for the souls in Purgatory who died wearing the Brown Scapular
Praying the Rosary of Our Lady of Mount Carmel without wearing the Brown Scapular is incomplete.
