Take the next step

Do You Want to be Enrolled in the Brown Scapular?

The Brown Scapular is not magic. It is a habit. By wearing it, you say: Mother, I belong to you.

What do you need?
1. The Sacrament of Baptism
You must be a baptized Catholic.

2. A Brown Scapular of brown wool
Not plastic, not metal, not a medal for enrollment — real brown wool.

3. The 21-Day Brown Scapular Catechesis
This is our Investiture and Consecration Formation. The Apostolate of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and the Brown Scapular organizes this in parishes and schools. You must complete it before enrollment.

4. The Enrollment Rite
On the day of enrollment, the Priest blesses the Scapular, places it over your head, and prays the prayer of the Church, consecrating you to Our Lady.

By this enrollment, you become a member of the Carmelite Family.

The heart of the devotion

The Brown Scapular: a sign, not a charm.

The Scapular points beyond itself to a life of faith. It is not a lucky charm, a substitute for conversion, or a guarantee apart from living in Christ.

01 / THE SIGN

What it is—and is not

The small Scapular is a sacramental sign of belonging to the Carmelite family and of consecration to Mary. It encourages prayer, fidelity to the Gospel, and trust in God’s grace. It does not work by magic.

02 / THE PRIVILEGE

The Sabbatine Privilege

This traditional devotion expresses hope for Mary’s help after death. It is not an automatic exemption from judgment or a guarantee. Historical claims and conditions should be discussed with a priest; the Church calls all the faithful to conversion and perseverance.

03 / A WAY OF LIFE

Wear it worthily

Receive enrollment from an authorized priest or deacon, wear the Scapular reverently, live chastely according to your state in life, pray regularly (such as the Rosary), and practice devotion to Our Lady in a life of faith and charity.

Cloth Scapular or medal?

After enrollment, a priest can explain the Church’s norms for substituting a blessed medal for the cloth Scapular. The medal is not a shortcut to enrollment; ask your priest for guidance about the blessing and conditions.

Common questions

Do I need to be enrolled?

Enrollment by a priest or deacon is the ordinary way of formally joining the Scapular devotion. Ask your parish priest about arranging investiture.

Does the Scapular guarantee salvation?

No. It is a sacramental sign calling a person to live as a disciple of Christ with Mary—not a lucky charm or a substitute for faith and repentance.

What prayers or practices are encouraged?

Regular prayer, fidelity to the Gospel, and chastity according to one’s state in life are central. Ask the priest who enrolls you about the guidance applicable to you.
