When we are enrolled in the Brown Scapular, we do not just put on a devotion; we put on a habit. In the monastic tradition, a habit is a visual sign of a lifelong commitment to poverty, chastity, and obedience. For the laity living out in the world, wearing the miniature habit of Mount Carmel is a daily call to “clothe ourselves in Christ” and strive for personal holiness amidst our ordinary duties.
To wear the scapular worthily means to let Mary’s virtues reshape our everyday actions. It means asking ourselves: Am I speaking with the charity of Mary? Am I facing unexpected trials with her quiet trust? Am I prioritizing silent prayer in a hectic schedule?
The scapular is not an insurance policy for the lukewarm, but a uniform for the faithful. Every time we adjust it on our shoulders, let it be a conscious choice to strip away old, sinful habits and put on the virtues of humility, purity, and profound love for God.
